Extractor hoods, filters, cleaning and maintenance!

Updated: Aug 23

Cooker Hoods Explained by Hotpoint

Extractor hoods (also known as range hoods or cooker hoods) are essential kitchen appliances designed to improve air quality and maintain cleanliness. Here's a breakdown of why we need them and how to maintain and clean them:

🌀 Why Do We Need Extractor Hoods?

  1. Remove Odours and Smoke: They extract cooking odours, smoke and steam, preventing them from lingering in your kitchen or spreading throughout your home.

  2. Improve Air Quality: By filtering out airborne grease and pollutants, they help maintain a healthier indoor environment.

  3. Reduce Moisture and Mould Risk: Extractor hoods help control humidity levels, which can prevent mold growth and damage to walls and cabinets.

  4. Enhance Kitchen Lighting: Most hoods come with built-in lights, improving visibility while cooking.

  5. Protect Kitchen Surfaces: They reduce grease buildup on walls, ceilings and cabinetry, making cleaning easier and extending the life of your kitchen finishes.

🧼 How to Maintain and Clean an Extractor Hood

1. Regular Cleaning Schedule

  • Weekly: Wipe down the exterior with a damp cloth and mild detergent.

  • Monthly: Clean or replace filters depending on the type.

2. Cleaning the Filters

  • Metal Mesh Filters (common in ducted hoods):

    • Remove and soak in hot, soapy water.

    • Scrub gently with a soft brush.

    • Rinse and dry thoroughly before reinstalling.

  • Charcoal Filters (used in recirculating hoods):

    • Cannot be washed. Replace every 3–6 months depending on usage.

3. Cleaning the Fan and Interior

  • Turn off power before cleaning.

  • Use a degreaser or vinegar solution to clean the fan blades and interior surfaces.

  • Avoid harsh chemicals that can damage components.

4. Check the Ductwork (for ducted systems)

  • Inspect annually for blockages or grease buildup.

  • Professional cleaning may be needed if airflow is reduced.

5. Replace Bulbs and Check Electricals

  • Replace burnt-out bulbs with manufacturer-recommended types.

  • Ensure all electrical connections are secure and safe.
